About Qigong
Qigong (气功) is a general name of various Chinese traditional techniques to maintain wellbeing, cure diseases, stay young, prolong life and even develop some potential body’s functions such as psychokinesis (PK) or extrasensory perception (ESP). Qigong comprises practices that coordinate the body, breath and mind mainly based on Chinese philosophy. It is a very comprehensive and complicated system developed in China and has thousands of years of written history. In addition to the blood circulation, the ancient Chinese believed that there was a ‘qi’ (chi 气) circulation via a complicated meridian (pathways called jing luo 經絡) system in the body. The ‘qi’ can be described as a metaphysical concept of an energy force or vital energy of the body. Qi is also considered as the most basic element in the universe and everything in the universe has its own qi. Qi is a fundamental principle of both Chinese medicine and Chinese martial arts. Qi is invisible, but it can play a powerful role in the universe and human life. ‘Gong' (功) means practice or training methods, so ‘qigong’ can be translated as the training system of the qi, to cultivate and balance life energy. Qigong is an important and most mysterious component of Chinese culture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). From ancient sages to modern successful people, many have experienced the benefits and value of qigong practice. Qigong practice can be for self-healing, relaxation, meditation, spirituality, self-cultivation and training for martial arts.
Our Qigong Background & Experience Stories
Last century in the 80s, qigong practice in China became a great mass fervour and there was an upsurge all over the country; various qigong techniques and training courses were springing up like mushrooms. At that time, China Pharma’s founder, Dr Jie Shen, was a director of the Qigong Association of Beijing Medical University which is the top medical university in China and led qigong scientific research. Based on his extensive medical knowledge and qigong practice experience, he collected and improved some of the most popular and valuable qigong techniques, which forms our qigong series. In 1991, he came to the UK as a clinical post-doctoral research fellow at King’s College Hospital supported by the UK’s Wellcome Trust; at the same time he began to teach his qigong series in King’s College Hospital, Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, Wales, Forest of Dean, etc. A UK GP and her husband (a British Airways pilot) helped Dr Shen organised a workshop for UK doctors in London’s Norwood Medical Centre; all the doctors who attended his course gave it very good reviews in a formal report. As a result, in 1995, his qigong series was accepted as a doctor’s training course by the UK Post Graduate Education Allowance (PGEA); UK doctors who attended his course could claim the cost from the PGEA.
Dr. Shen’s grandfather, Dr. Xian Heng Yang, was a famous TCM doctor and great qigong master in central China. About one hundred years ago, many people suffered from corneal clouding due to chronic eye infection and this caused blindness. Dr Yang was able to use his gold knife to cut and get rid of the membrane, so people could recover sight. At that time there was no anaesthetic to use during the operation. Dr Yang would get a mouthful of water and spray towards the patient’s eyes - people would not feel pain at all and he would be able to carry out the operation successfully. Very few doctors could use this magic technique at that time; even today this mystical phenomenon still cannot be explained scientifically. This was a kind of medical usage of qigong techniques.
Dr Shen studied qigong and TCM from a young age from the family. At the height of his qigong practice, he demonstrated his supernatural powers or extrasensory perception (ESP) in front of more than three hundred people in the first gymnasium of Beijing University, which is the leading university in China, in 1990. A man around 50 years old stood two metres away from Dr Shen; the man asked Dr Shen if Dr Shen could identify what health problems the man had by using qigong techniques. Dr Shen closed his eyes and used his third eye to emit qi. After using this method to screen the man’s body for about 30 seconds, in front of his forehead appeared an image of two lumbar vertebrae which showed some damage. Dr Shen opened his eyes and told the man that he had a lower back problem. Several people in the crowd witnessing this asked the man if this was correct. “Yes, my back was hit by a car years ago and I suffer from chronic back pain,” said the man. A round of applause burst from the audience. “Continue, try again and see if I have any other health problems,” said the man. Dr Shen closed his eyes again and used his third eye to scan the man’s body. This time, even quicker than the first time, in less than twenty seconds and in a similar way, an image like an X-ray of a stomach appeared in his forehead but the shape showed a long shape and downward displacement. Dr Shen, with his medical knowledge, identified this as gastroptosis. “You have chronic stomach disease and suffer from gastroptosis,” Dr Shen told the man. Many in the audience asked the man if this was true. “Yes I have suffered from digestive problems for more than 30 years and X-ray imaging has shown that I have gastroptosis,” the man said. Another outburst of applause erupted from the audience.
When Dr Shen was invited to teach a qigong weekend course in Wales in 1994, the organiser asked him to demonstrate emitting qi in front of more than 40 attendees. There was a 75-year old man called Tom attending the course who suffered from knee pain. Dr Shen asked him to lie down on the floor and placed his hand aimed at the man’s knee around two feet away and started to emit qi. Every time, he emitted his qi, the man’s knee would twitch. Then Dr Shen asked the man to turn over so he could not see any hand movements. With the man facing down, when Dr Shen’s hand emitted qi on the back of the man’s bad knee, the knee would still twitch each time following Dr. Shen’s hand movement. After that Tom’s knee pain disappeared. All workshop attendees were astonished and excited. This showed the existence and the healing effect of qi.
Qigong Self-Healing Success Stories
Maureen, a Welsh lady, had suffered from MS (multiple sclerosis) for many years and she lost eyesight three times. She could not walk properly and her face had a blusih tinge. She was a spiritual healer herself. When she attended Dr. Shen’s qigong weekend workshop for the first time, she had to rely on her husband to help her stand and practise some movements, but she was very positive and practised very diligently. She had confidence that Dr Shen’s qigong would help her to recover, because she told other students that she could see there was a three feet aura and glow surrounding him. The weekend workshop was held once every two months; during the interval, she wrote a letter to Dr. Shen to tell him about her practice results and reaction, she told Dr. Shen that after she practised she felt very sleepy; she knew it was a good reaction, because before her main problem was that she could not sleep. Dr. Shen replied to her letter and told her that her understanding was right; the body needs sleep to repair and encouraged her to sleep as much as she possibly could. At the next workshop before Dr. Shen saw Maureen, the first thing the organiser and other students told him is that Maureen had completely changed and recovered, and became a totally new Maureen. When she arrived she had pink cheeks, moved nimbly and with agility – her whole body full of vitality. Everyone was amazed and cheerful and sent her their congratulations.
In 1993, a breast cancer lady with her husband escaped from King’s College Hospital themselves without telling the hospital because they discovered that some patients in the same ward had died and the lady’s health was deteriorating rapidly. After that, they attended Dr. Shen qigong course. This lady was deaf–mute due to the side effect of streptomycin when she was younger. Her husband used sign language to help her understand instructions and she practised very conscientiously. Her health condition got better and better; six months later, they went back to Hungry to visit her family. Her father was a doctor and brought her to the best Hungarian hospital and had a full check-up, which showed everything was normal. When they came back to London, the lady began to study fashion and they carried on their normal and happy life. During that period of time, Dr. Shen discovered that more and more patients were asking him to help treat their health problems, he realised his knowledge and skills were valuable and useful for the British people. He also understood that if he could combine Traditional Chinese medicine and qigong together, people would be able to heal more quickly. When the couple knew Dr. Shen needed to set up a TCM clinic, her husband in his name helped Dr. Shen register a limited company in the UK, because Dr. Shen still held a Student Visa at that time, he could not do so himself. His visa nearly expired soon as well. Another student who suffered from digestion problems and hypertension completely recovered after attending the qigong course. He introduced Dr. Shen to a local MP, after the MP understood Dr. Shen needed more time to stay in the UK to carry on some research about qigong healing of incurable diseases, he immediately wrote a letter for him to the Home Office; by his letter, Dr. Shen quickly and smoothly extended his visa. Dr. Shen’s medical qualifications were also recognised by the UK Department for Work & Pensions which issued the work permit of Chinese Medicine Doctor for him in 1995. At that time very few qualified Chinese medicine doctors worked in the UK. Very soon, Dr. Shen and his wife started their clinic at southwest London in the spring of 1996. Due to the UK’s advanced and free National Health Service, the NHS, almost all patients who came to the clinic were suffering from incurable diseases by conventional Western medicine, so Dr. Shen faced great challenges to treat these diseases. He realised that common TCM knowledge was not enough to deal with these challenges. He must improve and innovate upon traditional Chinese medicine to meet modern healthcare challenges. In order to create new solutions by combining traditional Chinese medicine and modern medical sciences, he studied and researched wholeheartedly for more than twenty years - this website displays his partial achievements.
